We will be starting LITTLE HOUSE IN THE BIG WOODS and FARMER BOY on Monday, December 1st.

Students will go to the following website to do some research:

I hope students thoroughly enjoy our book studies – the simple times, some of the old-fashioned

language, and the attention to detail.  Have you read these books?  If not, it’s a great time to

read them as your child reads them.  HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!

Election

Filed under: Uncategorized — andersok @ 12:59 pm

What an exciting time in the history of our country!  No matter who wins this election, new ground will be broken.  Will we have our first African American president or will we have our first femal Vice-President?  Whatever the results, I thought it would be fun for students to pretend as if they were the President.  We went to the following website http://teacher.scholastic.com/scholasticnews/games_quizzes/electiongame/game.asp

Students had to make some decisions on important issues and then their results were printed in newspaper format.  This will be a fun addition to students’ portfolio.

The Joy of a Great Book

Filed under: Uncategorized — andersok @ 9:20 pm

Third graders read with first graders today in the gym and the classroom.  The students were so attentive as they listened to their third grade partners read to them.  I’ve never met anyone that doesn’t enjoy listening to a great story.  Later in the year, first graders will get a chance to practice their reading skills on third graders.  This will allow for some mentoring/teaching on the part of the third graders.  How do you know when you truly know something?  When you can teach someone else!

My love affair with books started at an early age.  Clifford the Big Red Dog was one of my first buys.  I also remember being nervous on Fridays because I wanted to ask the teacher if I could please take the basal reader home for the weekend!  Facilitate your child’s love of books and words any way you can, but one of the best ways is to curl up each night, tune out the world, and for whatever amount of time you can squeeze out of the busy day- get lost in the wonder of those pages.  Happy reading!

Spelling Fun

Filed under: Uncategorized — andersok @ 2:46 pm

Check out www.spellingcity.com for a fun way to study spelling words.  Go under Students, Find a List, and type Kristi Anderson in the Search box.  Students choose the current list and they can listen to a lesson on the words, play a game, or take a test.  I will post each week’s words sometime on Monday after we’ve taken the pre-test.  This makes reviewing words fun!  Enjoy!

Welcome!
